Situated in Hennepin County, the city of Golden Valley, Minnesota is a western suburb of Minneapolis, and the corporate headquarters of General Mills and Pentair. Interstate Highway 394, US Highway 169, and Minnesota Highways 55 and 100 are the main routes through the city. Surrounding and nearby communities include Crystal, Hopkins, Medicine Lake, Minneapolis, Minnetonka, New Hope, Plymouth, Robbinsdale, St. Louis Park, and Wayzata. Settlement of the area began in the early 1850s, and the community was incorporated as a village in 1886. During its early years, Golden Valley was a small agricultural community, supporting farms, mills and dairies. Residential development of the town began after the Electric Luce Line Railroad extended its tracks to the community in 1912. More residential development came with industries that were developed there after World War II, and Golden Valley became a city in 1972. Since 1970, its population has remained fairly steady, with minor decreases, from a peak population of 24,246 in 1970 to 20,371 in 2010.
