Located in northwestern Minnesota, the city of Hallock is the county seat of Kittson County. US Highway 75 and Minnesota Highway 175 are the chief routes through the city. Nearby communities include Kennedy, Lake Bronson, Lancaster, Mattson, and Northcote, in Minnesota, as well as Bowesmont, Joliette, and McArthur, in North Dakota. The Canadian border is about twenty miles north. Hallock was platted in 1879, the same year that a post office was established there, and named for Charles Hallock, an American author who often came to the area to hunt, and who had purchased land there. Hallock was incorporated as a city in 1887, and was designated the seat of county government in 1891. Hallock was the main location for the filming of the movie, Fargo, although the setting was supposed to have been in Brainerd, because Hallock had better snowfall during production of the film.
