The southeastern Minnesota city of Harmony is in lower Fillmore County. US Highway 52 and Minnesota Highway 139 are the chief routes through the city. Nearby communities include Amherst, Big Spring, Bristol, Canton, Granger, Hutton, Lenora, and Prosper. Florenceville, Iowa is about ten miles southwest of Harmony. The community was first settled in the fall of 1852, platted in 1858, founded in 1880, and incorporated as a city in 1896. The Harmony post office was originally at Peterson, but moved to Harmony in 1862, although it was initially named Windom, adopting its current name in 1865. Amish began moving to the area in 1974, mostly from Ohio, and associated with the Swartzentruber Amish. Harmony is currently hosting the largest Amish community in Minnesota. The city’s population reached one thousand in 1950, and has remained fairly stable since then, although with a very slight downward trend.
