Named for Hartland, Vermont, the city of Harland is in Freeborn County, in southern Minnesota. Settled in the spring of 1857, the community was platted in 1877, and incorporated in 1893. Originally, the town center was a mile south of the current site, but the business district moved when the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad’s track was laid a mile away. Minnesota Highway 13 is the chief route through the small city. Nearby communities include Albert Lea, Alden, Armstrong, Bancroft, Baroda, Bath, Clarks Grove, Ellendale, Freeborn, Geneva, Hollandale, Manchester, Matawan, Minnesota Lake, New Richland, Waldorf, and Wells. Mankato is about fifty miles northwest, and Rochester is about seventy miles northeast of Hartland.
