Located in northern Aitkin County, Minnesota, Hill City was incorporated in 1910, separating from Hill Lake Township in 1911. A post office had been established there in 1901. The community is situated along the shores of Hill Lake, and named for the large hill at the southern end of the lake, which is known locally as Quadna Mountain. Hill Lake, on the eastern part of the city, is a popular site for fishing, boating and swimming. There are three parks in the city, Bear Park along Highway 169, Ben’s Park on Lake Avenue, and Hill Lake Park along the lake. The city is bordered on the south and east by Hill River State Forest. Nearby communities include Ball Bluff, Blackberry, Haypoint, Jacobson, La Prairie, Remer, Shovel Lake, Swatara, and Waukenabo. Cloquet, Minnesota is about seventy miles east of Hill City. From a peak population of 928 in 1920, Hill City’s population has fluctuated over the years, with a population of 633 in 2010.
