Holdingford is in Stearns County, in central Minnesota. The town was platted by Randolph Holding in the 1870s. He had come to the area in 1868, homesteading on the west side of a ford area on the South Two Rivers River, where he established a general store and post office in 1872. At around the same time, the village of Wardeville was platted on the east side of the river, and the post office was moved there in 1894. Two years later, in 1896, the villages of Holding and Wardeville combined and was known as Holding Ford. Between 1907 and 1909, the Soo Line Railroad was constructed through Holding Ford, and a concrete bridge was built over the river in 1919. In 1930, the name of the village was changed to Holdingford. During the Prohibition years, Stearns County became a large producer of moonshine, as the majority of the area farmers began distilling spirits, and its product became known as Minnesota 13. Nearby communities include Albany, Avon, Bowlus, Elmdale, Freeport, North Prairie, Opole, Rice, Royalton, St. Anna, St. Anthony, St. Francis, St. Rosa, St. Stephen, St. Wendel, and Upsala. St. Cloud, Minnesota is about thirty miles southeast of Holdingford.
