Situated along the South Fork of the Crow River, the City of Hutchinson is in McLeod County, Minnesota, largely along the shores of Otter Lake. The Hutchinson Family Singers, a mid-19th century American family singing group, founded the town in 1855, and a post office was established there in 1856. The Hutchinson Singers set aside five acres for the Humanities Church, fifteen acres for parks, and eight lots for educational purposes. Hutchinson was incorporated as a city in 1904. The main routes through the city are Minnesota Highways 7, 15, and 22. Nearby communities include Biscay, Cedar Mills, Cosmos, Heatwole, Komesnsky, and Lakeside. Glencoe,, Minnesota is about fifteen miles southeast, and Dassel is about fifteen miles north of Hutchinson.

Founded in 1926, Troop 246 is one of the oldest Boy Scout troops in central Minnesota. Serving boys from age eleven to eighteen in Hutchinson, the troop is part of the Crow River District in the Northern Star Council of the Boy Scouts of America youth organization.
