The city of Independence, Minnesota is in western Hennepin County, about twenty-five miles west of Minneapolis. Maple Plain is surrounded by Independence on every side except the east. Other nearby communities include Delano, Greenfield, Long Lake, Loretto, Medina, Mound, Orono, Rockford, Spring Park, and Watertown. Robina Lake is entirely within the city limits of Independence, while Lake Rebecca, Lake Sarah and Lake Independence form boundaries to the city. Two major Three River Parks, Rebecca and Baker, can be accessed directly from Independence, and the Luce Line recreation trail crosses the southern part of the city. Pioneer Park is on County Road 90, north of Highway 12. Despite its proximity to the Twin Cities metropolitan region, Independence is largely rural, with horse farms, summer camps, and golf courses.
