Named for the adjacent seven-mile-long lake, the city of Lake Benton is on Buffalo Ridge in Lincoln County, in southwestern Minnesota. The chief routes through the city are US Highways 14 and 75. Nearby communities include Arco, Burchard, Florence, Ruthton, Tyler, and Verdi. Elkton, South Dakota is about twelve miles west of Lake Benton. Plans for the creation of the town took place on the shores of the lake in the summer of 1879, and the village was incorporated in 1881. The railroad reached the community in 1879, and that brought new businesses to town. Lake Benton became the county seat in 1881, although it was moved to Ivanhoe in 1901.
