The city of Lanesboro is in Fillmore County, which is in southeastern Minnesota. The Root River runs through the town, and there is a waterfall on the edge of town. The Root River State Trail and other bike paths serve the town, and there is a nearby Amish community. Minnesota Highways 16 and 250, as well as County Roads 8 and 21 are the chief routes through the city. The city of Whalen is just northeast of Lanesboro, and Preston is about nine miles southwest. Lanesboro was platted as Lanesborough in 1868, and a post office was established the same year. The spelling of its name was changed to Lanesboro in 1883. The city was named for R.A. Lane, one of its founders. Arthur B. Langlie, the 12th and 14th governor of the State of Washington, was born in Lanesboro.
