Founded around 1900 as a stop along the Burlington Railroad, which later became the Rock Island Railroad, the village was named for the surrounding township, which itself had been named for a village in Ireland. The first business in town was the St. Croix Lumber Company, which initially operated from a tent. The first building was a saloon built by James Beacom, and the second was a store built by O.B. Bratager. Later that year, a grain elevator was constructed by James Montgomery, James Ramage opened a lumber yard and hardware store, and the Bank of Lismore opened in September of 1900. The city’s population has remained small throughout the year, decreasing each census year since 1980, with a peak population of 350 in 1920 and its low point being 227 in 2010.
