Located between St. Paul and Stillwater, Mahtomedi is a suburb of the Twin Cities. Situated along the southern and southeastern banks of White Bear Lake, the Washington County city is about fifteen miles northeast of St. Paul. Nearby communities include Dellwood, Gem Lake, Grant, Lake Shore Park, Pine Springs, and White Bear Lake. Originally, Mahtomedi was part of Greenfield (now Grant) in 1858. In 1918, Mahtomedi became part of Lincoln Township, which was split off of the western sections of Grant, and also included the villages of Dellwood and Wildwood, along with the eastern half of White Bear Lake. Platted by the First Mahtomedi Assembly of the Chautauqua Association in 1883, Mahtomedi was largely a village of summer lake homes. The Assembly built several cottages and a tabernacle capable of seating three thousand people on the southeastern side of White Bear Lake, and tent villages soon sprung up. In 1888, a hotel was built for those who didn't want to rough it in tents. The Lake Superior & Mississippi Railroad reached the east side of the lake in the early 1870s, and the Minneapolis & St. Paul Suburban Railroad Company arrived in 1892. The Twin City Rail Transit Company began offering regular streetcar service to Mahtomedi and Stillwater in 1899, and an amusement park was set up on the southeast shore of White Bear Lake. The area became known as Wildwood Park, for the amusement park. Steamboats offered regular tours around the lake. In 1931, residents voted to incorporate the City of Mahtomedi. However, with the coming of the automobile, people were able to travel wherever they wished and, between that and the depression, the park was forced close in 1932, and was dismantled in 1938. Since its first recorded census in 1940, Mahtomedi has gained population each census year, although the rise in its population has slowed considerably since 2000.
