Middle River is a small city along the Middle River, in Spruce Valley Township, Marshall County, Minnesota. Along Minnesota Highway 32, Middle River is north of Holt and south of Strathcona. The Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge is east of the city, and other nearby communities include Gatzke and Strandquist. Thief River Falls is about twenty miles south of Middle River. The community was incorporated as a village in 1904 and, in that year, the post office in Breese was moved to Middle River. The Great Northern Railway station in Breese was moved to Middle River. Except for an increase of 11.9% in 2000, the population of Middle River has been in decline since 1960, when it had a peak population of 414.
