Montevideo, Minnesota is the governmental seat of Chippewa County. The city is situated in a double river valley, where the Minnesota and the Chippewa rivers converge, producing good farmland, prairies, scenic overlooks, and bluffs. The city is at the junction of US Highways 59 and 212 with Minnesota Highways 7 and 29. Northwest of Montevido, along Highways 212 and 7, is Watson, while Wegdahl and Granite Falls are southeast. Other nearby communities include Asbury, Boyd, Cerro Gordo, Dawson, Gluek, Gracelock, Lac qui Parle, and Maynard. Appleton is about twenty-five miles northwest, Willmar is thirty-five miles northeast, and Marshall is forty miles south of Montevideo. The city’s population grew rapidly from 862 people in 1880 to a peak population of 5,845 in 1980, but has been on a slow decline since.
