Monticello is situated along the Mississippi River, at the northern end of Wright County, Minnesota. Every winter, hundreds of trumpeter swans nest near Mississippi Drive Park in Monticello, since the river is heated from warm water discharged from the Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant. Monticello was platted in 1854, and a post office has been in operation there since 1855. The community was incorporated as a village in 1856. It was named for its position at the base of a little mountain. Monticello Township was organized in 1858. Topics related to either the township or the city are appropriate for this category. Monticello is across the river from Big Lake, Salida and Bailey. Maple Lake, Minnesota is southwest, Albertville and Rogers are southeast, Enfield, Hasty and Clearwater are northwest, and Buffalo is south of Monticello. Minneapolis is thirty-nine miles southeast, and St. Cloud is twenty-eight miles northwest.
