Moose Lake is in lower Carlton County, Minnesota. The main routes through the city are Interstate Highway 35, Minnesota Highways 27 and 73, and County Road 61. The southeastern part of the city is on the banks of Moosehead Lake, and Moose Lake State Park is on the other side of the lake. Other nearby lakes include Coffee Lake, Island Lake, Moose Lake, and Sand Lake. The community of Kettle River is northwest of Moose Lake, Sturgeon Lake is southwest, and Barnum is northeast. Cloquet is twenty-eight miles northeast of Moose Lake. Moose Lake was one of the communities affected by the 1918 Cloquet Fire, and the Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Depot in Moose Lake is a museum that tells the story of that massive fire.
