Morristown, Minnesota is in Rice County. Most of the city is on the southern bank of the Cannon River, although a portion of the city is on its northern banks. The main route through the city is Minnesota State Highway 60. Along Highway 60, Morristown is east of Waterville and west of Warsaw, with the latter being its nearest neighbor. Other nearby localities include Deerfield, Elysian and Kilkenny. Faribault is just over ten miles northeast of Morristown. Alexander Faribault, for whom the city of Faribault is named, came to the region of the Cannon River to trade with the Indians in 1826, establishing trading posts at Lake Sakata, on the current site of Waterville, another at the current site of Morristown, and the third on the northwest shore of Cannon Lake. Morristown was platted in 1855, and incorporated as a village in 1874. Morristown Township was organized in 1858, both named for Jonathan Morris, who came from Pennsylvania to Minnesota in 1853, settling in Morristown in 1855. A post office was established in 1856, with Walter Morris, Jonathan’s son, as postmaster.
