Situated in northwestern Ramsey County, the city of Mounds View is a suburb of the Twin Cities, with Minneapolis about twelve miles away, and St Paul about fourteen miles from Mounds View. Nearby communities include Arden Hills, Blaine, Fridley, New Brighton, Shoreview, and Spring Lake Park. Mounds View was created first as a township on May 11, 1858, the day that Minnesota became a state. Then largely rural, Mounds View continued as a township for more than a century. In the 1930s, developers began building in Mounds View Township and, in 1951 Arden Hills broke off to form a village, and over the next several years portions of the township were annexed to surrounding villages and cities. In 1957, there were plans to annex the balance of the township so voters determined to incorporate as a village instead. Mounds View became a city in 1973 when the state legislature made cities of every village, town and hamlet in Minnesota. The city is largely residential, with a few industries and commercial operations. Its population increased by more than sixty percent in the 1960s but hasn’t changed significantly since.
