Located in lower central Minnesota, the city of North Mankato is primarily in Nicollet County, although a portion of the city extends into Blue Earth County and, as its name might imply, it is just north of Mankato, separated from Mankato by the Minnesota River. The chief routes through the city are US Highways 14 and 169, as well as Minnesota Highway 60. Other nearby communities include Benning, Eagle Lake, Judson, North Star, Rapidan, and Skyline. An iron truss bridge was built across the Minnesota River, connecting Mankato with North Mankato in 1879, and North Mankato was incorporated as a village in 1898. Since its first census in 1900, North Mankato's population has increased each census year, usually in the double digits of percentage points.
