Oak Grove, Minnesota is in Anoka County. The city is bordered by St. Francis on the north, East Bethel on the east, Ham Lake on the southeast, Andover on the south, Ramsey on the southwest, and Nowthen on the west. Other nearby communities include Anoka, Bethel, Crown, Linwood, and Soderville. Minneapolis is less than thirty miles to the south. The city is largely made up of low density residential neighborhoods, with some commercial areas. The Rum River flows generally north-south through the western portion of the city, and Lake George, Hickey Lake, Grass Lake, and Swan Lake are situated within the city limits, while Mud Lake and Norris Lake are just outside the northwest city limits. Cedar Creek flows southwest across the southeastern portion of the city, emptying into the Rum River just outside of the city’s southwestern borders. Oak Grove became an organized township in 1857, named for a large grove of oak trees in the area. The village of Oak Grove was incorporated as a village in 1854, encompassing the former township, and as a city in 1993. A post office operated in Oak Grove from 1857 to 1901.
