Plainview is in lower Wabasha County, in the southeastern part of the Richard J. Dorer Memorial Hardwood State Forest in southeastern Minnesota. The main routes through the city are Minnesota Highways 42 and 247, and County Road 4. Nearby communities include Altura, Beaver, Elba, Jarrett, Millville, Oakridge, Potsdam, Theilman, Viola, and West Albany. Wabasha is about nineteen miles northeast, Rochester is twenty-three miles southwest, and Zumbrota is about thirty miles west-northwest of Plainview. The area was settled in 1854, and the townsite was platted in 1857, and incorporated as a village in 1875. Originally, the town was incorporated as Centerville, but was changed in 1857 when a post office was going to be established, as another place in Minnesota was named Centerville. Plainview Township was organized in 1858, taking the name of the city. Carley State Park is located within the township.
