Caledonia, Mississippi is located mostly in Lowndes County, with a portion extending into Monroe County, in the upper-eastern part of the state. Originally, the community was called Yeggerstown, as several of its early settlers had the surname of Yeggers, sometimes spelled Eggers. However, it appears that the town was also known as Caledonia from an early date, as there is a reference to it as Caledonia as early as 1812, although it was sparsely populated until the 1830s, a post office wasn't established until 1883, and the community was formally incorporated as a village in 1904. Its early economy was largely dependent upon the cotton industry. Nearby communities include Kolola Springs, New Hamilton, Steens, Vernon, and Wells. Tuscaloosa, Alabama is about sixty miles from Caledonia.
