A large portion of the city is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, particularly its shopping district and the east side of town. No major battles were fought in Canton during the War of Northern Aggression, but the city played a major role as a rail and transportation center, and several wounded soldiers were treated in Canton or transported through the city. Canton is on the Mississippi Blues Trail, and several movies have been filmed in Canton. Nearby communities include Annandale, Davis, Gluckstadt, Livingston, Richton, Scotland, and Sloan. Jackson, the capital of Mississippi, is about twenty-five miles to the southwest.
