Horn Lake, Mississippi is in DeSoto County, just a few miles south of Memphis, Tennessee. The city is bordered by Southaven to the north, east and southeast, while US Route 51 forms a large part of the city’s eastern border, leading north to Memphis and south to Hernando. Interstate Highway 55 runs east of Horn Lake. Besides Southaven and Memphis, other nearby communities include Lynchburg, Nesbit, Olive Branch, and Capleville. Tupelo, Mississippi is just under a hundred miles southeast of Horn Lake. The headquarters of the American Contract Bridge League are in Horn Lake, along with its hall of fame, museum and library. The Elvis Ranch, a 155-acre ranch owned by Elvis Presley during the last ten years of his life, is also in Horn Lake, although it is now known as the Circle G Ranch. Horn Lake was incorporated in 1973, and named for an ox-bow lake just west of the city, which was once a riverbed of the Mississippi River, which changed course in the late 1700s, leaving a stranded body of water shaped like a cow horn. The town existed long before it was incorporated. Freight addressed to Horn Lake was dropped off on Goodman Road and delivered by horse and wagon in the 1830s, after the Chickasaws were forced to relinquish their claims to the land, and a post office by that name was established there in 1853.
