Picayune, Mississippi, the largest city in Pearl River County, was founded in 1904 and named by the owner and publisher of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, Eliza Jane Poitevent Nicholson. The newspaper, and therefore the Mississippi city, were both named for the Spanish coin by the same name.
