Shuqualak, Mississippi is in lower Noxubee County, in the central-eastern part of the state. Located along US Highway 45 and Mississippi Route 21, the town is adjacent to Calyx, to the southeast. Other nearby communities include Binnsville, Cooksville, Dinsmore, Fairhill, Fearns Springs, Geiger, Gholson, Handle, Lynville, Macon, Mashulaville, McLeod, Paulette, Preston, Scooba, and Wahalak. Columbus, Mississippi is about forty miles north, Meridian is about fifty miles south, and Tuscaloosa, Alabama is about eighty-five miles northeast of Shuqualak. The community began as a stop along the Mobile and Ohio Railroad in the 1850s. A post office was established there in 1855, and the town was incorporated in 1859. Shuqualak Female College was established there in 1880, although the female seminary is no longer in operation. The town’s population peaked in 1930 at 810. The Shuqualak Lumber Company was founded in 1948, and is a large producer of southern yellow pine. An auxiliary landing field for Columbus Air Force Base is south of the town.
