Bloomfield is the county seat of Stoddard County, Missouri. Named for the wildflowers that covered the town site, Bloomfield was located on the site of a former Shawnee village, and platted in 1835. Due to the town’s strategic location on Crowley’s Ridge, a large fort was constructed in the burned town square of Bloomfield during the Civil War. One of the largest Civil War battles in the state was fought in Bloomfield and, in 1861, while Union forces occupied the town, a group of Illinois soldiers published the first official issue of the U.S. Armed Forces newspaper, Stars and Stripes, and a Stars and Stripes Museum can be found in Bloomfield. Bloomfield is south of Aquilla, southwest of Avert, west of Circle City, northwest of Hunterville, north of Dexter, and northeast of Redd.
