Caruthersville is the largest city in Pemiscot County, and its county seat. The city is situated along the Mississippi River in the Bootheel region of far southeastern Missouri. The city is near the intersection of I-55 and I-155, while Missouri Highway 84 passes through the center of town. Hayti and Hayti Heights are to the northwest, the state of Tennessee is across the river to the east, and Arkansas is to the southwest. The town was platted by John Hardeman Walker and George W. Bushey in 1857, and named for Samuel Caruthers, who represented the area in the U.S. Congress. Prior to that time, the area has been known as La Petite Prairie, and then Lost Village. Caruthersville was incorporated as a city in 1874, and named the county seat, replacing Gayoso, in 1898. Construction of a bridge across the Mississippi River connecting Caruthersville with Dyersburg, Tennessee was begun in 1969 and completed in 1976.
