Clinton, Missouri is the county seat of Henry County. In 1834, Rives County was officially organized, and later renamed Henry County for Patrick Henry. The city of Clinton was laid out in 1837, and named for New York Governor DeWitt Clinton. The first lot was sold to John Brummet on February 19 of that year. John Nave opened a tavern and hotel in Clinton in August of 1837, and several other businesses soon followed. Construction on the court house began in December of 1837, and the building was completed in August of 1839. Clinton is southeast of Garland, south of Quarles, and northwest of Coal.
