Marshfield, Missouri is the seat of government for Webster County. The area was settled in 1830 after the Osage were forced to leave, and a county seat was laid out in 1856, the same year that a post office was established. The town grew slowly until the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad extended its tracks through the town in 1872. However, the town was hit by a tornado in 1878, and a larger one in 1880, the latter killing ninety-nine people and completely leveling the town. The astronomer, Edwin P. Hubble, attended the public school system in Marshfield through the third grade. Marshfield is located along Interstate Highway 44, which passes through the west part of town. High Prairie is located east of Marshfield, while Holman is southwest, and Conklin and Cross Way are west of the town. The larger city of Springfield is about twenty-six miles southwest of Marshfield.
