New Melle is a small town in southwestern St. Charles County, Missouri. The community was named for the hometown of some of its early settlers, who came from Melle, Germany in 1839. The town runs along the southern end of Missouri Highway Z, while its original center was at the crossroads of Highways D and F. Soon after the town was settled, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church was established in 1844, and twenty acres were set aside for the town, which was laid out in sixteen one-acre plats, with a market square. The town was hit hard by the Great Depression of the 1930s, followed by World War II, and today New Melle remains a small, largely rural community. Darden is northeast of New Melle, while the August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area is to the east, Cappein is southwest, and Pauldingville is northwest.
