There are four communities in Missouri by the name of Oak Grove, but the primary population center by that name is the city of Oak Grove, which is in both Jackson County and Lafayette County, in central-western Missouri. The city was laid out in 1878, and named for the grove of oak trees nearby. There is also an unincorporated community by that name in St. Francois Township, in Madison County, which also received its name for its location in a grove of oak trees. There is also an Oak Grove Village in central-eastern Missouri, which is in Franklin County, and an unincorporated community by the name of Oak Grove Heights in Greene County, in southern Missouri. This community was formed around a Seventh-day Adventist Church that was established there in the early 1900s, and was once known as Advent Town. Although these are separate communities in different parts of the state, sites that refer to either of these towns may be listed in this category but, due to its much larger population, the majority of the sites found here will refer to the city in Jackson and Lafayette counties.
