Laid out in 1873, Pilot Grove was named for an old-growth grove of hickory trees that once served as a local landmark. The community’s early settlers were largely German, and the town grew as a railroad town after the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad extended its tracks to the area, building a depot. The trains quit running in the early 1970s, its tracks replaced by the Katy Trail. Today, the city is served by Missouri Routes 135 and M, with Interstate Highway 70, which is also US Highway 40, passing north of the community, just above Chouteau Springs. Billingsville is northeast of Pilot Grove, while Bellair and Speed are southeast, and Pleasant Green is to the southwest of the town.
