Situated on the Mississippi River, in central-eastern Missouri, Portage Des Sioux is in St. Charles County, opposite Elsah, Illinois. The city was founded in 1799 by Spanish Lieutenant Governor Zenon Trudeau and Francois Saucier after Spain learned of American plans to construct a military post twelve miles downstream. The area had been an overland escape route between the Missouri River and the Mississippi River used by the Sioux. While fleeing their enemies, they used this area as a portage for their canoes rather than paddling all the way to the confluence of the two rivers. The Treaties of Portage des Sioux were signed here in 1815, settling Native American and U.S. government conflicts in the War of 1812.
