The city of Purdy is in Purdy Township, in Barry County, in southwestern Missouri. The town was platted in 1880, and named for George A. Purdy, a prominent early resident. Interestingly, dancing is not permitted in the Purdy school district without permission from the school board, a policy that was upheld by the Supreme Court when it refused to hear a challenge by students and parents. Surrounding communities include East Purdy, Butterfield, Corsicana, Star City, and Monett. A portion of the Mark Twain National Forest is southeast of the small city.
