Situated in central-eastern Missouri, near the Illinois state line, the city of Rock Hill is a suburb of St. Louis. The city was named for an old church nearby, which got its name from a Presbyterian minister who encountered two steep rocky hills on his way there each Sunday. Aside from Native American tribes, the area was first settled by the French, who established permanent homes in the early 1800s, and a trading post in 1864, although the community was not incorporated as a village until 1934, and a fourth-class city in 1941. Surrounding communities include Brentwood, Maplewood, Warson Woods, and Webster. St. Louis is eleven miles to the east.
