Centered along St. Charles Rock Road, a few miles southeast of Lambert-St. Louis International Airport, and between Highways 115 and 180, the city of St. John is in St. Louis, Missouri. The middle class residential suburb of St. Louis was created in the mid-1900s as people sought to move from the larger city into the outlying areas. The community was first known as Uniondale, an unincorporated settlement within the boundaries of Overland. St. John was separated from Overland and incorporated as a village in 1945, in an area that once consisted of a three or four hundred acre farm owned by John L. Ferguson, who also operated the St. Charles Ferry Company, and the city was named, at least in part, for him. During the 1960s, St. John grew by annexing unincorporated areas to the east and west, and through consolidations with Marvin Terrace and Elmdale, becoming a city after consolidating with Margona Village in 1974. Surrounding communities include Bel-Nor, Bel-Ridge, Breckenridge Hills, Greendale, Overland, Sycamore Hills, and Woodson Terrace. The city of St, Louis is just under fifteen miles to the southeast.
