Salisbury is in Chariton County, Missouri. The town was formed on land that was first owned by a War of 1812 veteran by the name of Prior Bibo, who was granted the land for his military service. Judge Lucius Salisbury purchased the land in 1856, and it was he who arranged for the town to be platted the following year. The new town's first post office was in Mr. Salisbury's home and the community took his name. Salisbury was chartered as a fourth-class city in 1882. Early businesses included two hotels, a flour mill, three tobacco factories, three agricultural equipment manufacturing plants, and several merchants. Salisbury is located along US Highway 24. Surrounding communities include Clifton Hill, Keytesville, Prairie Hill, and Shannondale.
