Scott City, Missouri is primarily located in Scott County, although a portion of the city spills over into Cape Girardeau County. It is in the southeastern portion of the state, but above the panhandle. Named for the county, Scott City was formed through the consolidation of the towns of Ancell and Fornfelt (formerly Edina) in 1960, and Illmo (Whipporwhill's Hollow) became part of Scott City in 1980. Fornfelt and Illmo were established when the Thebes Railroad Bridge was constructed, and the St. Louis & Southwestern Railroad came through the area. Fornfelt was settled in 1904, and incorporated that same year, while Illmo was incorporated in 1905. Scott City is accessed largely through US Highway 61, which intersects Missouri Highway K. Kelso is southwest of Scott City, Cape Girardeau is northwest, and Thebes, Illinois is east of the city, separated by the Mississippi River, which forms the state line.
