Situated in Saline County, in central Missouri, the city of Slater was founded in 1878, and named for John F. Slater, who had come to the area from Connecticut. The actor, Steve McQueen, lived with his maternal grandparents and great-uncle in Slater periodically during his childhood. Missouri Highway O passes through the city, while Missouri Highway 240 becomes Industrial Boulevard as it leaves Highway O to turn eastward, passing along the southern part of the city. Gilliam is east of Slater, while Cambridge is to the northeast, Orearville is south, Norton is southwest, and New Frankfort is to the north.
