The city of Choteau is situated along US Routes 89 and 287, about twenty miles east of the Rocky Mountains, and near the Flathead National Forest, the Rocky Mountain Division of the Lewis and Clark National Forest, and Glacier National Park. Choteau is the seat of government for Teton County, Montana. Named for Pierre Chouteau, Jr., president of the American Fur Company, who brought the first steamboat up the Missouri River, Choteau is one of the oldest active towns in Montana. Choteau is south of Koyl and Byrium, southwest of Brady, northwest of Eastham Junction and Fairfield, and north of Gilman. John Edward Erickson, the eighth governor of Montana, was a resident of Choteau. Talk show host, David Letterman, was married in Choteau in 2009. He had purchased a ranch there in 1999.
