Located on the north bank of the Yellowstone River. about forty miles west of Billings, the city of Columbus is the county seat of Stillwater County, Montana. It is in the south-central part of the state. The community was formed as a stagecoach stop; originally known as Sheep Dip, its name was changed to Stillwater but this proved a problem with mail delivery due to a Minnesota town by that name along the Northern Pacific Railroad, so its name was changed to Columbus. The early economy of the town was related to the railroad, but also to its rich base of natural resources, particularly its stone quarries. Along I-90, Columbus is located between Greycliff and Big Timber, to the west, and Park City and Laurel, to the east.
