The town of Ennis, Montana is in Madison County. US Highway 287 passes through Ennis, following the Madison River as it descends from West Yellowstone. The Tobacco Root Mountains are to the northwest, the Gravelly Range to the southwest, and the Madison Range to the east, and Ennis Lake is north of town. The Shoshone, Flathead, and Bannock tribes hunted the area before European settlers arrived. In 1863, gold was discovered in Alder Gulch, prompting a gold rush. William Ennis homesteaded the site along the Madison River around that time, around which the town that bore his name was formed. Today, Ennis and the Madison Valley are primarily cattle country, with farms, ranches, and rodeos. Ennis is south of McAllister and Norris, northeast of Virginia City, and north of Cameron.
