The small city of Hobson is in Judith Basin County, in central Montana. The town site for the city was selected by the Billings and Northern Railroad when its tracks were laid through the Judith Basin in 1907, and named for S.S. Hobson, a successful rancher, who donated the land for the town site. By 1910, Hobson had a saloon, a grocery store, hardware store, and clothing store, as well as the Murray Building which housed the town’s first bank, a dentist’s office, lawyer’s office, and a large room for concerts and other activities. The Pleasant Valley School west of town was soon overcrowded, and a new school building was ready for occupation by 1910, as well. The town’s economy has always been based on agriculture, and continues so today. Hobson is located where Montana Highway 239 meets US Highway 87, south of Moccasin, east of Utica, and west of Moore.
