Founded in 1908 as a base for the crews who were laying track for the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, the small town of Melstone is in Musselshell County, Montana. Situated along US Highway 12, Melstone is in the central-eastern part of the state, southwest of Bascom and northeast of Musselshell. Although the railroad closed in 1980, Melstone has continued as a community center for surrounding farmers and ranchers. With a total population of under one hundred, the Melstone Broncs won the State Boys Basketball Championship in 2006, becoming the smallest school ever to win the state championship.
