Sunburst is a small town in Toole County, Montana, situated near the Canadian border, about thirty miles north of Shelby. Sunburst is named for the stark appearance of the sun bursting over the buttes of the nearby Sweet Grass Hills. The towns origins are in farming and ranching, which continues to be a significant part of the local economy. The town’s population reached nearly a thousand people at one point after oil development occurred there from the 1920s to the 1970s, when Sunburst again became an agricultural town. Neighboring towns include Kevin, Oilmont, Sweetgrass, and Whitlash. The town is accessed through I-15.
