Incorporated in 1910, the town of Terry is the county seat of Prairie County, Montana. Terry is situated between I-94 and the Yellowstone River, in the heart of agate country, where people come from all over to search the rivers, creeks and hills gathering agates to use for jewelry, wind chimes, coffee tables, and other purposes. Before the town was formally platted, the settlement was known as Joubert’s Landing, for the man who operates a supply point there for freighters along the Yellowstone River. When the Northern Pacific Railway reached the area in 1881, the town was renamed for General Alfred Howe Terry, who headed an 1876 expedition connected with Custer’s campaign against the Native Americans. Terry is southwest of Marsh and Glendive and northeast of Kinsey and Miles City.
