The small town of Westby is in Sheridan County, Montana. When the town was founded in 1910, it was in North Dakota, and named by combining the word west, noting its position in extreme western North Dakota, with the word by, which is Danish for town, as its early settlers were mostly immigrants from Denmark. The town was part of North Dakota until 1914, when it was moved across the border in order to be nearer to the newly built branch line of the Soo Line Railroad, and in a state that permitted the sale of alcohol. Westby is now located in Montana, at its border with North Dakota, and near the international boundary with Saskatchewan, Canada. Westby is located along Montana Highway 5, southeast of McElroy and Comertown, and west of Fortuna, North Dakota.
