Situated in the Jefferson Valley, at the base of the Tobacco Root and Highland Mountain ranges, and in the Deerlodge National Forest, the town of Whitehall is in Jefferson County, Montana. Today, the small town features several snowmobiling trails for winter recreation, as well as summer trails, and hunting opportunities in the mountain ranges surrounding the valley. Like many Montana towns, Whitehall began as a railroad community, after the Northern Pacific and Montana Railroad bought forty-five acres to establish a depot in Whitehall in 1889, named for the Illinois town by that name. The townsite was filed in 1890, and lots began to be sold in that year. Whitehall is located on Route 55, just south of I-90, between Pipestone Hot Springs to the west, and Jefferson Island to the east. Waterloo and Silver Star are south of town. The broadcaster, Chet Huntley, lived in Whitehall for a time as a child.
