The city of Ainsworth is the county seat of Brown County, Nebraska. The community was named for Captain James E. Ainsworth, chief construction engineer for the Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley Railroad, which completed its line to Ainsworth in June of 1882. Several people filed homestead claims to land along the railroad, including Nannie J. Osborne, who had arrived in the area as a cook for two prominent families, and received title to 160 acres along the railroad right-of-way. She platted her land into lots in 1883, including building sites for the First Congregational Church and the United Methodist Church, as well as the Courthouse Block, preparing the new settlement to become the county seat. Ainsworth was incorporated as a village in 1883.
